Solar EXPEDITION: The sun in your pocket

SolAR Expedition is an augmented reality application that immersively shows you the planets of the solar system, the lights of our star, the Sun, how solar storms are born, and the instruments on the European Space Agency and NASA mission Solar Orbiter.

The second of the series, SolAR Expedition was created with the idea in mind that not everyone has access to virtuality headsets, but smartphones and tablets are more commonly found. Then, what about creating an educating, yet fun app to explore the Sun and its surrounding?

This project has two sides: as an exhibition, SolAR Expedition has four totems reminiscent of the "Fifth Element" movie with each of them representing a scene: the Sun, the Solar System, Solar storms, the Solar Orbiter. The public is invited to browse around, tablet in hand, and see the celestial objects in 3D while moving around freely.
As a downloadable app, SolAR Expedition shows the same scenes. This time, the public is invited to explore the many different topics, with hidden layers of information as curiosity leads the way.

Where to find it?

SolAR Expedition is shown as an augmented reality application exclusively during the SpaceTravelVR exhibitions (contact us for more info). However, the classical (non-augmented reality) version is freely available on Google and Apple stores for use on smartphones as well as tablets.
